SETTLER’S CABIN FALL 2006

Wow! What a hot summer! Glad to see the back side of it. Now when the daytime is getting cooler and the light hours are fewer, Christmas is on the horizon and that makes me think of specialized gifts. Think about giving up some of those painted treasures to someone who will appreciate them as a gift.

Because of our schedule this year, I have not had the opportunity to create many new projects and certainly not big items. The calendar does not have intense scenery classes but I will do my best to offer you one or two in January and in the early part of February. The summer version of the red truck is still in drawing only; keep in touch as I have often painted a project and put it in place of a seminar that doesn’t have enough registration to run. I will consider running repeat of any of the classes during your time slot if you can get 6 or more people in the class.

Marty’s computer crashed prior to Open House and we have lost all of the email addresses from people who were on our mailing list. Please go onto the site and add your address to the list so that we can keep in touch with you. Sorry for the inconvenience…sometimes the computer imp has the last laugh.

In the past we stated that the surface that you paint on for classes in the studio is the one on display or a surface from the Settler’s Cabin wood catalogue. The cost of those surfaces has not been increased, even though the price of the raw wood has doubled, and we do offer those wooden surfaces at a reduced rate for the classes. We rely on the sales of our surfaces as part of our income. This year we have changed our policy; surfaces other than those purchased from Settler’s Cabin will be allowed as painting surface as long as you let us know in advance and note that the class fee for those students will be increased to from $35.00 to $45.00 for an all day lesson and from $17.50 to $22.50 for a 3 hour lesson. The prices that are listed after each surface are what you pay for the surface when you take the lesson; these surfaces have been reduced because we like to give our students a break and if you would like to purchase a second surface or you would like to purchase the surface without taking the class, then the Catalogue Cost will be the price that you pay for the surface. When we have to purchase the surfaces for class then we cannot offer a discount.

Settler’s Cabin reserves the right to cancel a class if there are not enough students. If this should happen, we may run the class at a different time, or combine it with another and transfer your deposit (and paid class fee), or refund your money. In the event of an emergency or if we receive justified notification of your cancellation, we will gladly transfer your deposit to another class. If it happens that you don’t attend your class, the deposit will be transferred at our discretion, and not necessarily refunded. Any transfers of deposit monies must me made within one year of the class.  Class fee does not include paints unless stated.

You will notice that some classes start at 9:30 and some at 10:00; some finish at 4:00 and some at 5:00. The reason for this is that I feel that we need a little more time on some of the classes. The studio will open one half hour before the class. Please check your class start times so that you do not show up too early. Bring a lunch, snacks, water and drinks; you can put them in the fridge at the back of the room if need be. We supply the coffee and tea.

SEMINAR CLASSES

CLASS # 1“River Dance Loons”

The colours used for this piece are similar to the “Misty Morning Loons” pattern packet. In the early hours of a misty morn on the lake, two adult loons challenge a loon stranger that comes too close. They perform their version of the “river-dance”, shouting out with loon hoops and walking on the water. The surface is a pine-sided serving tray with an MDF bottom, and it is large enough to use when BBQ season roles around or to hang on a wall or you can paint it on the panel and we’ll build a frame for it. Delta Ceramcoat paint.

Date: 2 Days    Saturday & Sunday September 23 & 24           Time: 9:30am – 5:00pm       Lesson Cost: $70.00                  Painting Surface: Tray $ 40.00              Catalogue Price Cost: $ 37.00

CLASS # 2 PAINT YOUR POOCH

Back by popular demand because some of you missed it the last time that I offered it. Paint your own dog or a wonderful treasure for special “pooch parents” that you know. For this class, you will have to take a good quality picture of your pooch and send it to me before the class. I will make a pattern so that you can transfer the outline onto the MDF oval or rectangular background. You will be required to work on your own with some direction as to how to paint the fur on your particular pooch. I work with different brushes and techniques to paint the fur on dogs. The MDF ovals have cut-out paw prints around them and have separate backboards, making it easier to paint and to hang the finished painting.

Date: Saturday, September 30                          Time: 9:30am to 5:00pm                       Lesson Cost: $35.00Painting Surface: Small Oval $20.00   Medium $25.00  Large $35.00

I think she wants to shell out kisses instead of those swee-e-e-e-t candy apples…so ya better pucker-up!

CLASS #5 LIGHTHOUSE - PUNCHED TIN CANDLE LAMP

This lamp has punched holes in the pattern of three lighthouses and light radiates from either the light fixture at the bottom or from a candle that you burn inside the tin piece. The piece comes with a light fixture and the bracket to suspend a scented or unscented candle above it. You can eliminate the candle and just use the light or you can just use a candle without the light fixture being turned on. I have a “Yankee” scented jar candle in mine and I don’t light it. The heat from the bulb melts the candle and causes the scent of the candle to waft around the room. I painted textured lighthouses and sailboats around the surface. This piece makes a nice gift for a special occasion. If you want a scented Yankee candle, please let me know before October 2.

Date: Saturday, October 28                              Time: 10:00am to 5:00pm                                 Lesson Cost: $35.00                Painting Surface: Candle lamp with light fixture $28.95
